Situated in the rugged heart of Anarkand’s middle-east, Kuja is a small yet formidable nation whose power far outweighs its modest size. With a population just shy of 5 million, Kuja has built its reputation not on trade or diplomacy, but on technological development, militaristic control, and self-reliance. Its cities are densely packed and heavily industrialised, dominated by sprawling research facilities, weapon foundries, and some of the most advanced spaceports on the continent.
The capital city, Kuja City, stands as the administrative and ideological centre of the nation. It is a cold, grey metropolis filled with towering monuments that celebrate Kuja’s scientific might and military history. Streets are wide and sterile, guarded by ever-present patrols of the Kuja Defence Authority (KDA), the nation’s highly disciplined enforcement and surveillance force. Civilian life is tightly controlled, with strict curfews, mandatory work assignments, and an omnipresent propaganda network reminding citizens of their duty to the Motherland.
At the political helm of Kuja stands the Commercial Premier, who is in control of the nations commercial affairs at home and abroad. The Military Premier is responsible for the nations armies, spacecraft and transport systems, and all weapons manufacturing, research and other militaristic competencies. The General Premier is responsible for everything else, and is supported by a network of crafters, technicians, economists, scientists, and ministers bound by loyalty. Citizens are taught from an early age that Kuja’s survival depends on obedience, secrecy, and military readiness.
There are no true elections, no foreign press, and no tolerance for dissent. Any sign of rebellion is swiftly crushed under the pretext of “national protection.” State media portrays the outside world as weak, decadent, and dangerously envious of Kuja’s accomplishments.
Despite this oppressive order, the nation’s people are fiercely patriotic. They take immense pride in Kuja’s technological achievements, from advanced propulsion systems to the continent’s most efficient orbital launch systems. These innovations have earned Kuja respect, and fear, across Anarkand.
Kuja’s military-industrial complex is the backbone of its economy. Its scientists and engineers are revered as heroes, working in secretive laboratories beneath the mountains of eastern Kuja to design the next generation of weaponry and spacecraft.
Their weapons are traded discreetly with other nations, particularly Kvatch, Kuja’s long-standing ally to the east, and Tyrrius to the west. Together, these three nations form an informal but potent military bloc known as Trident, though no official treaty exists. The relationship between them is based on pragmatic cooperation, technological exchange, and shared animosity toward the perceived moral superiority of the western powers.
Kuja’s space programme, once designed for exploration, now primarily serves military and surveillance functions. Its orbital stations are rumoured to carry devastating long-range defence systems - claims the Kuja government neither confirms nor denies.
The Anarkis Incident
Relations between Kuja and Anarkis have been fraught with tension for centuries, but recent events have brought them to the brink of open conflict.
In the 12th Era, two Anarkis air blimps entered Kuja’s airspace en-route to Tyrrius. Kuja’s air defence network immediately identified the vessels as “foreign reconnaissance units” and shot them down without warning. Over 120 civilians were killed.
Anarkis condemned the attack as an act of barbarism, insisting the airships were civilian transports registered under the Temple of Anark’s peace charter. Kuja’s leadership, however, maintained that the blimps carried hidden surveillance arrays designed to map their restricted airbases and satellite uplinks.
Just months later, a Kuja military seacraft was destroyed in the Anima Ocean under mysterious circumstances. Anarkis denied any involvement, yet evidence of energy signatures consistent with Anarkis weapons technology was found in the wreckage. Since then, Kuja has accused Anarkis of deliberate provocation, while Anarkis claims Kuja is attempting to justify a war.
This spiralling conflict has divided the continent. The Temple of Anark have, as yet, refused to be drawn into discussion with either party.
The everyday life of a Kujan citizen is one of strict order and patriotic conformity. While food and housing are guaranteed, luxury and leisure are almost non-existent. Every household is required to display the national crest and a portrait of one of the three Premiers, and all young must undergo “State Ascension Training” by the age of seven.
Yet, beneath the rigid surface, Kuja’s people are intelligent, resourceful, and quietly ambitious. Many dream of seeing the outside world, though few ever do. Travel beyond Kuja’s borders is tightly restricted, with only scientists, diplomats, and high-ranking officials allowed to leave the country. The Military Premier advises against foreign travel due to the possibility of capture, imprisonment, or death at the hands of those who fear Kuja.
