Draconis

A b o u t

The nation of Draconis took root in the First Era of Anarkand, upon fertile valleys hemmed in by high mountain ranges and deep forests. Its geography was both a blessing and a curse: while its borders granted natural defences, its position at the crossroads of Kumantarakis, The Union of Kabal, Atlantia, and Baalmark left it exposed to perpetual rivalries.

Faced with annihilation from stronger neighbours, the early rulers of Draconis bound themselves to a singular solution; the forging of an immortal protector. Through rites combining the lifeblood of the land, ancestral magic, and their own sovereign essence, they created Dracona, a guardian said to embody mountain, river, and sky.

Dracona was sealed in perastone marble between the Pillars of Salvation, a colossal statue whose heartbeat could be faintly felt by those who dared to approach. From that day forth, the people called themselves the Draconis, and the nation took its name from the immortal being who watched over them.

Though dormant for centuries, Dracona’s looming presence defined the culture of Draconis and the people established their capital around the statue, treating it as the axis of their world. Laws were carved into red perastone tablets and placed at its base, to bind justice with the guardian’s gaze.

Surrounded by ambitious kingdoms, Draconis society became deeply martial, yet tempered by spiritual devotion. Every soldier swore their oath before the statue, vowing to “stand as stone until called to flame”.

Be it fact or fiction, the most defining moment in Draconis history, according to the old accords, came from beyond Anarkand.

When the skies darkened with the alien fleets of the Yuna, hailing from the Temperance star system, the Draconis gathered at the statue, calling upon their guardian for the first time. The perastone cracked, Dracona awoke and the battle that followed shook the land.

Dracona’s wings blotted out the nearby sun of whatever system Anarkand was in at that time, its roar split the skies, and its fire reduced Yunan warships to molten slag. The Guardian drained the essence of the Yunan, scattering it into the soil and rivers of Draconis, leaving the land more fertile than ever before.

What might have been the end of Draconis became its rebirth. The invasion was destroyed utterly, and the Guardian returned to its dormant form, veins of glowing crimson running through its marble body as proof of its power.

In the aftermath of the Yunan invasion, Draconis flourished. The alien vitality that seeped into the land made crops richer, steel harder, and the people themselves healthier and longer-lived. Shrines to the Guardian sprang up across the countryside. Pilgrims travelled from afar to lay offerings at the Pillars of Salvation, believing the Guardian blessed their journeys.
